Train-the-Trainer Workshops
What are Train-the-Trainer Workshops?
These workshops are designed to teach peer support leaders across Canada about resources for depression symptom management, including electronic health (e-health) and mobile health (m-health) resources. A combination of webinars and in-person training sessions are used. Trained peer support leaders can, in turn, teach community members about self-management tools and strategies. By using a “train-the-trainer” model, this initiative aims to increase the spread of knowledge and skills for managing depression. These workshops are delivered collaboratively with the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the CAN-BIND Knowledge Translation team. The concept for the workshops was developed by Dr. Erin Michalak from the University of British Columbia, originally for bipolar disorder.
Who leads this initiative?
Dr. Erin Michalak (UBC, CREST.BD) and Dr. Sagar Parikh (CAN-BIND) lead this initiative. Workshops are supported by staff at the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario (MDAO).
What are the main goals of this initiative?
Increase Access to Self-management Resources
- There are many tools and strategies that can help individuals manage their mental health symptoms. This initiative raises awareness about available resources, and provides the skills needed to use these resources effectively.
Build Mental Health Capacity in Communities across Canada
- The in-person training component takes place at local peer support organizations. Working with established community partners helps to build capacity for mental health support locally, and facilitates community impact through education.
Share Best Available Tools
- New e-health and m-health applications, or “apps”, are created regularly, and it can be difficult to keep up with the latest tools, and even more difficult to determine which tools are evidence-based. These workshops introduce peer support leaders to best available tools and include live demonstrations.
